Diaphragmatic Hernia

Diaphragmatic Hernia is the herniation of abdominal contents inside thoracic cavity.It may be congenital(since birth) or acquired(following injury).

Patients suffering from herniation has to be treated surgically by repairing the diaphragmatic opening & sending back the abdominal contents into proper place.

1) What Is A Diaphragmatic Hernia?

Ans: A diaphragmatic hernia occurs when abdominal organs moves upward into chest through a defect in the diaphragm. This kind of defect can be present at birth or acquired later in life.

2) What Causes Diaphragmatic Hernia?

Ans: It may occur due to abnormal development of the diaphragm while the fetus is forming or as a result of a blunt(Traffic accidents) or penetrating injury(stab or gun shot wound).

3) What Are The Symptoms Of Diaphragmatic Hernia?

Ans: Difficulty in breathing,Rapid breathing,chest pain etc.

4) How A Diaphragmatic Hernia Is Diagnosed?

Ans: It is diagnosed by thorough physical examination,USG of abdomen,X-ray chest & CT scan of chest.

5) How It Is Treated?

Ans: Surgery is the treatment of choice.It must be performed to remove the abdominal organs from the chest and place them back into the abdomen. The surgeon will then repair the diaphragm.
