Tracheal surgery is one of the challenging surgery in thoracic discipline.Narrowing of trachea(wind pipe) is known as Tracheal stenosis.Tracheal stenosis may be a complication of prolonged endotracheal intubation or injury.Tracheal tumour is also important disease which needs treatment. The gold standard of management of Tracheal tumours & stenosis is surgical resection of diseased segment & reconstruction.In selected cases non surgical management is recommended.

1) What is trachea?

Ans;Trachea is a windpipe which starts in the neck just below the voice box and continues down behind the breastbone.

2) What are the diseases of trachea treated by surgery?

Ans: This includes airway narrowing or blockages(stenosis), cancerous and noncancerous tumors, and problems with the larynx (voice box).

3) What is done in tracheal surgery?

Ans: The types of tracheal surgery include: Tracheostomy creating a stoma (hole) in the front of the neck and through the stoma a tube is inserted which helps in breathing. • Rebuilding and widening of the windpipe using pieces of cartilage from another area or from a donor. • Removing a section of the windpipe and joining the two ends.

4) What are the non surgical options for management of those diseases?

Ans; The non surgical options are dilatation,stenting,Laser or Cryo ablation etc.It has its specific indications.

5) What are the risks for tracheal surgery?

Ans: Tracheal surgery is a major surgery which carries risks & complications.Dehiscence of tracheal anastomosis,restenosis,respiratory tract infections are some of them.
