1) What is thoracic surgery?

Ans: The surgery that deals with the chest wall & its contents including Lung,Esophagus(Food Pipe),Trachea(Wind Pipe),Pleura(covering of inner chest wall &outer wall of thoracic contents) ,Pericardium(Envelope covering the heart),Diaphragm(Partition wall separating thorax & abdomen),Thymus(an intrathoracic gland),Tumors of chest, chest Injury & deformities of chest wall etc.

2) What are diseases treated by thoracic surgery?

Ans: Diseases of Lung,Esophagus,Trachea,Diaphragm,Pleura,Pericardium,Chest wall due to infection(e.g.TB),Tumour,Trauma ,Developmental error etc.

3) How is the thoracic surgery performed?

Ans: Thoracic surgery is usually done under general anaesthesia.Many a times the lung in the operating side is made to collapse by anaesthetist so that operation becomes easier to perform.In conventional or open thoracic surgery incisions of different length(10-30cm) made in chest wall & operation proceeded.

4) Is there any risk in thoracic surgery?

Ans :Any surgical procedure carries a risk .It may be very low,low.high or very high risk.It depends upon the type of surgery & associated diseases of the patients as well as infrastructural facilities.

5) How long a patient has to stay in hospital after surgery?

Ans: It depends upon the type of surgery & general condition of patient.Usually it is 3-14 days.
